Blacksmiths' spring swages, sometimes called "clapper dies" are top and bottom dies for doing specific tasks in forging. These dies are meant to work together to form your work. Many forging dies are designed to make reproducible parts. We have balls, mid-balls, acorns, ropes, and many other metal-forming spring swages. We also have many blacksmith spring swages designed to put textures into plain stock bringing your work to life with leaves and veins, wood textures, and many other textures.
*****The dies on these spring swages are drop-forged S7 or H13 tool steel. The clapper dies are heat-treated after forging and then welded to a mild steel spring. The weld wire is a high-tensile strength wire designed for use with dissimilar materials. However, the weld is also the stress point. Due to the likelihood that each blow will not be even, the weld will eventually fracture. For this reason, we can only replace these if the dies themselves fail and for a reasonable amount of time and use.
