The carbon for these forging railroad spikes is approximately 0.34%C with other alloys (see below). The Higher Carbon (HC) specification has an approximate tensile strength of 70,000 psi. Thus, the result is railroad spikes that have the advantage of improved impact resistance and improved ductility, while maintaining a relatively high strength.
These railroad spikes feature a forge or mill finish as they leave the mill. (They may be scaley and/or have surface rust).
