Anvils are as massive as is practical, because the higher their inertia, the more efficiently they cause the energy of striking tools to be transferred to the work piece. In most cases the anvil is used as a forging tool. Before the advent of modern welding technology, it was a primary tool of metal workers.
made of 6150 alloy steel with a surface hardness of 56 to 60HRC.
Using through hardening, also known as neutral hardening, which is the process of strengthening a steel alloy using a rapid quench for increased hardness throughout the material.
Has great bounce, smooth face and nice edges. Can be shipped out at any time.
Customer Reviews
The casting is clean with no bug holes in the steel. Very minimal dressing was needed prior to use. It’s a lively anvil with a large sweet spot. At three times the weight of my small anvil, it definitely makes forging more fun. I like the small shelf extending from the side of the face. The shelf is not really made for heavy strikes but it is very handy for straightening when working on longer pieces. It also provides good support for the tip while tapering. The upsetting block is substantial and well supported by the anvil stand. I haven’t used the block yet but it will be convenient upsetting 8” lower than the anvil’s top surface. The hardy and pritchel holes are clean and all of my old hardies fit better than the little anvil. The top edges of the holes came pretty square and sharp.
As I said, I haven’t used it long yet but I have no doubt that the anvil will provide a lifetime of service. It’s a big purchase. Blacksmiths Depot made it easy.
